You must be thinking , is it even possible that Kanika hates anything about travelling. Don’t get me wrong, I love travelling but there are certainly some things about it that are not so fun.I have love – hate relationship with travelling. The part I love the most about travelling is that anticipation and excitement of reaching the destination and setting off to explore it. But between leaving the house and reaching that place , is whole another world that makes me hate travel. SO I thought why not share with you – 10 things I hate about Travelling and then see if you agree with my list :
1) Packing :
Ooooh my God, there is nothing that I hate more than packing. Actually before jetting off to any new destination packing is always a reason of fight between me and Manhar. I mean always . With luggage rules for airlines changing every now and then , I hate to keep track off luggage allowance and then top it with trying to pack light. We always try to cover different landscapes and activities in our trips , this makes packing light so hard because we have to be prepared with any kind of climate for disfferent ladscapes. In my ideal world , I will have a home ( with everything I need) in every country , so that I don’t have to pack at all. But until then , this tops my list.
2) Applying for visa :
I have an Indian Passport , and of-course even before I could think of finalizing a destination – I have to make sure that I get visa in time. Between courier charges , visa application fees and sometimes going to nearby consulates for visa interviews , I have spent hundreds of dollars on visa. And every time it is same documentation , same set of documents. Personally if any consulate takes more than a week to give visa , I lose my interest (unless that destination is on top of my bucket list) and that means I can’t just spontaneously decide to visit an exotic far away place , I have to think and plan ahead.
3) Plane Boarding :
I love flying but I hate the hours that takes to get on to that no so cushy seat in the plane. I hate the entire boarding process. I personally feel , this entire boarding process brings out the worst in individuals . Kids crying , adults impatient , everyone in haste and to top it all when you are asked to open your entire bag because you forgot that tiny toothpaste somewhere in checked-in luggage. Hahahhahaha- I think i just narrated my worst nightmare.
4) American Custom and Immigration :
For all those who feel like me while leaving America on a vacation ” If we go on this vacation – we might not even come back . Bye Bye Home !!” – raise your hands please. And those who actually are immigrants, I urge you to visit fl-ilc.com. Going through U.S. Customs and Border Security is the most tedious and mentally exhausting part of the journey. I am not kidding. I feel there must be an unwritten rule that tells border security force at airports – You are suppose to be sour , never smile , be supremely suspicious and every individual must spend at-least an hour of wait time in the snail pace immigration line. Because nothing signifies a warm welcome like a hand-wringing 45-min wait with other “aliens” and a thorough interrogation of why you came to visit.
5) Lack of vegetarian options :
I know people make fun of me because I carry food ( more like emergency stash) on my vacations. The fact is I am vegetarian and a lot of destinations do not have much vegetarian food options. I also feel exhausted telling in restaurants that fish is meat – so my food should be no meat , no fish , no egg. Now I know many of you might argue saying – But most restaurants have some options in there menu. I agree – but I refuse to count pasta with marinara sauce and french fries as food. I try to eat healthy and not finding enough vegetarian options to eat in other countries drives me crazy.
6) Jet Lag :
Nothing is worse that travelling to your dream destination after hours of flying and – bam! – you are hit with this sudden wave of sleepiness, at two in the afternoon. And after days of adjusting to the time difference, it’s already time to head home. Not fair. Not fair at all. The worst is when you are back from the vacation , you are jet lagged but you still have to go to your 9 – 5 job that actually pays for your vacation 😉 … Sounds familiar??
7)Delayed flights /Missed Connections /Lost Luggage:
You plan , plan and plan and then your flight gets delayed or you miss the connection and then it ruins your entire trip. Sounds familiar ?? When I plan my vacation , I have something to see or do by every hour ( I know I sound like a psycho) and if I have to miss any of this because of flight delays – I absolutely hate it. Not to mention since these are my vacation days from work , every minute counts and I will not like to spend it on an airport.
8)Lack of Public Toilets :
I know being hydrated is key to healthy life , but this lack of public toilets has nearly killed me many times. There have been times when my stomach had not adjusted to the new food and this lack of toilets left me in a dreadful state. With years of travelling and near to stomach bursting experiences , I can give you one advise – Always carry toilet paper and paper soap strips with you. They are life savers
9) Unpacking :
I know they say that if you unpack the same day as you return – you are not normal. Well good news is – I am normal 😛 . I hate to unpack as much as I hate to pack. That whole mess of emptying out suitcases , laundry and putting everything back in order , is the most boring thing to do everrrr. Usually I unpack after a week of coming back from the vacation. How bout you?
10) Explaining world about my travel choices :
Nothing is more frustrating than justifying to everyone – why i travel over saving money . Or why don’t I now settle down and have kids but instead travel the world. Travel is something that rejuvenates me , frees me from boredom and kind of my stress-buster. I chose something over the other because it makes me happy. And when I feel saving is important or having kids is important , I will get to it. But every time facing those questionable eyes when i plan my travel – purely hate it.
So as I said , not all aspects of traveling is perfection. You ought to hate somethings. Even if these reasons make me hate travelling , the excitement of reaching to my destination and seeing a new world , keeps my spirits alive. What do you hate about travelling? Did any of your reasons made to my list? I will love to hear your experiences in comments below. Thank you so much for stopping by.
