Yes we kicked off our travels for this year and what a start. K.E.N.Y.AAAaaaaa … I am back but trust me, my heart is still in its wilderness. 7 days went by so quickly , but it left me with endless memories , unique experiences and never-ending tales of all that I saw. While so many of my friends have asked me : Why Kenya? , my soul motive was to see and click the wildlife in their natural habitat. Travelling in Kenya is an experience of a lifetime. National reserves , unforgettable safaris and Maasai tribal people – these are the three main things that I will always cherish about my time in Kenya. The beautiful East African republic is one of the continents most visited countries, and is famous for incredible safaris. If you are planning a trip (which I think you should ) here is a complete Itinerary and all that you can expect in the wilderness of Kenya. My “7 day Itinerary for Kenya”.
How To Reach :
By Air : We traveled from USA so definitely the best way to reach Kenya for me was by Air. Nairobi is very well connected by air from Europe, Asia and the rest of Africa. A flight from USA was almost 19 hours . I know it’s a long flight but trust me its worth it.
Note : There is a US$20 departure tax from Nairobi or Mombasa international airports.
By Rail : Train is an option worth considering only if you are travelling to Kenya from Tanzania or Uganda. There is soon going to be a superfast train between Uganda and Kenya that is going to reduce the travel time by half.
By Road: There are several bus services between Kenya and Tanzania. The main routes include—Mombasa to Dar es Salaam; Nairobi to Arusha and Moshi; Nairobi to Dar es Salaam; Voi to Moshi and Kisii to Musoma/Mwanza. There are also bus services from Uganda—there are three direct buses between Kampala and Nairobi.
Where to Stay :
For entire part of our stay , since we had booked the safari package all the accommodations were included in it. We booked our package with Hirola Tours and Travels and I totally recommend them. They were very professional, thorough and planned our trip really well. That being said ,there are limited number of hotels /resorts in most of the national reserves and they get filled pretty easily in peak seasons, so book accordingly. For most part we stayed in Sentrim Group of Hotels and I must say all their accommodations were very nice.
| Place | Hotel Name |
|---|---|
| Amboseli | Amboseli Sentrim Tented Camp |
| Lake Navaisha | Lake Naivasha crescent camp. |
| Lake Nakuru | Lake Nakuru Lodge. |
| Masai Mara | Mara Sentrim Tented Camp |
| Nairobi | Hotel Boulevard (Sentrim Group of Hotels) |
Itinerary :
| Schedule | From – To | Activity | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Nairobi – Amboseli. | Morning Game Drive and afternoon game drive . | Takes 5 hours from Nairobi to Amboseli |
| Day 2 | Amboseli | Full Day Game Drive | 8 hours in game drive |
| Day 3 | Amboseli – Lake Navaisha | Roam Around Lake Navaisha Crescent Camp | Takes 6 hours from Amboseli to Lake Navisha |

| Day 5 | Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara | Early morning game drive in lake Nakuru and leave for Masai Mara. Late evening game drive in Masai Mara. | Takes 4 hours from Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara |
| Day 6 | Masai Mara | Full Day Game Drive | 8 hours in game drive |
| Day 7 | Masai Mara – Nairobi | Early morning game drive and leave for Nairobi in afternoon. | Dinner at Carnivore and leave for Boston. |
Total Cost :
Since we were travelling from States , the flight was long and expensive. Booking a safari package worked out perfect for us as it covered everything – accommodation, food, car, gas. For most of the tour companies , they will cover your food expenses (all meals) but for drinks/beverages etc you will have to pay on your own. Here is the break-down of all our expenses.
Flights : 700$ per person ( Boston – Nairobi)
Safari Booking : 1620$ per person ( included hotels /car/all meals)
Tips : 90$
Departure Tax : 20$ per person
Extras : 100$ ( water/ drinks/ beverages)
Note : Since your car driver is actually your guide for the whole safari and is literally your life saver , they deserve to be thanked and hence tipped. Generally people tip 10$ per day per car. Tipping the waiters and room servers is not mandatory but is much appreciated.
So I hope this info helps you in planning your trip to Kenya. For all you vegetarians out there , Kenya has excellent food and you will get everything. If you are pondering over is it safe to travel to Kenya, my answer would be “Definitely , Yes” as long as you know which areas to avoid and when. 7 days was definitely not that long time to enjoy Kenya to its entiretly but it definitely gave me enough time to enjoy nature’s best. I will be soon sharing my spotting the BIG 5 moments in upcoming blog posts. Do let me know if you need any information on Kenya. Have you been to Kenya? Do share your experiences in comments below. Did you get the visa in Boston? Or not required like Tanzania…
hey guys.. thank you for stopping by. We applied for Visa online and then got visa on arrival ( stamped) . I think its same for Kenya and Tanzania now , visitors have option to apply for e-visa.. much much easy.
